Movies

Stopforbud, a Danish film with Bud Powell's music and Dexter Gordon talking a bit.

Delinquent Hipster Square, an episode of a TV show that features the Max Roach quintet, with some excellent footage of Booker Little. The TV show is amusing, and has more recently been treated to an updating.

Stars of Jazz, a TV appearance by the Max Roach quintet in 1958.

See the postscript to the Dolphy discography for some more film footage.

The primary focus of jazz discussion on the net is the Usenet newsgroup rec.music.bluenote (often referred to as rmb). Here are a few email lists - there are many more (see WNUR's page).

Mailing Lists

Sun Ra / Saturn mailing list

To subscribe to the Saturn list, send a message of
SUBSCRIBE SATURN (your full name)
to -
listserv@nic.surfnet.nl
(this address may vary for you if you have a BITNET account).

To unsubscribe, send a message of
SIGNOFF SATURN
to the same address.

You can set and query many options once you are successfully subscribed - for example you can suspend mail delivery during holiday periods by sending the message
SET SATURN NOMAIL
to the same address.

For full details of all the other options available to you (daily digests, message acknowledgment options, archive retrieval, etc.) send a message
INFO REFCARD
to the same address, listserv@nic.surfnet.nl

Contributions to the discussions on the list itself are made by sending mail to -
saturn@nic.surfnet.nl

Messages sent to saturn-request, owner-saturn, etc. will not receive an automatic response from the listserver, but will reach the list administrator, who is currently:

Jazz-L

Jazz-L is a mailing list centered on jazz, but with a broad distribution of topics. As one longtime subscriber put it, "...This humble salon of ours is unlike anything else on this fair planet. While the ratio of jazz to other discussion may vary, we do manage a consistency and level of chewing satisfaction of which we are quite proud, and this stems from the very fact that, unlike other lists on which one might get chafed for discussing anything even slightly "off-topic", our laid-back forum and the virtual and personal bonds which we've established have enabled us to achieve something more like a real conversation, with intelligent (or sometimes just silly) tangents diverging and converging just like they would in an actual gathering of like-minded intelligent people from diverse backgrounds."

Actually, here are the full instructions:

There are three addresses you should always remember. They are:
JAZZ-L@BROWNVM.BROWN.EDU: Mail sent to this address goes to every person subscribed to the list.

LISTSERV@BROWNVM.BROWN.EDU (or LISTSERV@BROWNVM.BITNET): Send "SUBSCRIBE" or "UNSUBSCRIBE" and other commands to this address.

JAZZ-L-REQUEST@BROWNVM.BROWN.EDU: Mail sent to this address gets forwarded to the present listowner. If you're having problems with the list, or questions about it, send mail here.

It is important that you not send commands to JAZZ-L@BROWNVM.BROWN.EDU. The commands will not be executed, and they will be sent to everyone subscribed to the list, which is annoying for them.

You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF JAZZ-L" command to LISTSERV@BROWNVM.BROWN.EDU (or LISTSERV@BROWNVM.BITNET). You can also tell LISTSERV how you want it to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. If you do not trust the system, send a "SET JAZZ-L REPRO" command and LISTSERV will send you a copy of your own messages, so that you can see that the message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way. After a while you may find that this is getting annoying, especially if your mail program does not tell you that the message is from you when it informs you that new mail has arrived from JAZZ-L. If you send a "SET JAZZ-L ACK NOREPRO" command, LISTSERV will mail you a short acknowledgement instead, which will look different in your mailbox directory. With most mail programs you will know immediately that this is an acknowledgement you can read later. Finally, you can turn off acknowledgements completely with "SET JAZZ-L NOACK NOREPRO".

There are many other commands you can use as well. You can get a list of them by sending mail to LISTSERV@BROWNVM.BROWN.EDU (or LISTSERV@BROWNVM.BITNET) consisting of the single line:
INFO REFCARD

This will introduce you to the joys of SET JAZZ-L NOMAIL and many other commands. Enjoy!

Please note that it is presently possible for anybody to determine that you are signed up to the list through the use of the "REVIEW" command, which returns the e-mail address and name of all the subscribers. If you do not want your name to be visible, just issue a "SET JAZZ-L CONCEAL" command.

More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV reference card, which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO REFCARD" command to LISTSERV@BROWNVM.BROWN.EDU (or LISTSERV@BROWNVM.BITNET).

Dolphy mailing list

I have set up an email discussion list for people to pass along information relevant to Eric Dolphy. To subscribe to Dolphy-L, send a message to Dolphy-L-subscribe@adale.org. So, for instance, I would send a message like:
To: Dolphy-L-subscribe@adale.org
From: alan@adale.org
Subject:
__________

Here is the blurb that describes our intentions for this list:

Welcome to Dolphy-L, a discussion list concerning the musician Eric Dolphy and related topics.

Eric Dolphy lived from 1928 to 1964, and recorded primarily after 1959. An excellent biography/discography of Dolphy, by Vladimir Simosko and Barry Tepperman, is available through Da Capo Press, and versions of that discography, along with various other information, can be found at http://adale.org/Discographies/EDIntro.html on the web. These sources can be consulted for answers to Frequently Asked Questions.

We expect this list to be low-volume, limited to informative posts. Although not moderated, the list-owner may impose restrictions, and may change the list to a moderated form if necessary. For broader discussion, the Usenet newsgroup rec.music.bluenote is highly recommended. Because for now (as of 1996) most people spend time reading all email they receive, we will strive to spare subscribers from receiving things they might not want. It is important to understand, however, that you will get email that you might not like, and rather than take offense it is almost always preferable to delete it and forget it. In particular, please do not reply to the list unless you have something to say to everybody - otherwise, reply ONLY to the individual to whom your comments are specifically directed. We would ask for a high degree of sensitivity to diverse cultural norms, as well as tolerance.

To subscribe, unsubscribe, obtain help or get info about the list, send messages to Dolphy-L-request@adale.org rather than to the list (Dolphy-L@adale.org) itself. The list-owner would appreciate your cooperation in minimizing how much manual labor is necessary to maintain the list.

Please SAVE this message somewhere convenient for the day when you will want to unsubscribe!

John Coltrane Mailing List

Hello and welcome to coltrane-l.

This is a short, and temporary, welcome message.

Most of the people subscribing right now are either folks that emailed me in the past saying they were interested in the list, or people that are subscribed to other lists I own.

Very quickly, my name is Jason Greshes and I'm an attorney in the Philadelphia suburbs. I run/own a bunch of music lists, running from Roxy Music to Paula Cole to Gustav Mahler. This is the first jazz list I've tried running.

My interest in jazz is relatively recent, and I'm sure there will be many on the list with more knowledge of jazz and Coltrane than me. However, I do know enough to know what kind of list I'd like to get going here.

When I first sent out mails to existing jazz lists asking if there would be interest in a Coltrane list, I received many emails expressing dissatisfaction with some or many of the existing jazz forums. The general complaint seemed to be that many lists and newsgroups weren't well-disposed to serious or lengthy discussions, were frequently just chat lists, etc. So I'm trying very hard to make this list available for serious jazz discussions, including ones that have nothing to do with Coltrane.

On the other hand, I don't want a list that is too intimidating for people that are interested in Coltrane and subscribe wanting to learn. Generally, I've found that takes to factors. One, the more knowledgable and/or the more academic people being friendly and receptive to newbies. [And academic and knowledgable are, of course, not synonymous in any way.] And second, newbies [or relative newbies] not falling into the typical newbie traps [either lurking forever out of fear, or expressing vast confidence in their own opinions which arose from listening to half a Coltrane cd and reading a newspaper article].

I'm going to hold off on the widespread announcements for the list until next week or later on in the weekend, so that we can have a couple of days as a smaller group to discuss what kind of list unofficial guidelines or suggestions we want to have.

So I'm asking everyone to send in an introductory message, introducing yourselves and giving some ideas about what you look for from the list.

A couple of important technical notes.

If you're one of the people that wrote me about a Coltrane list, you've suddenly found yourself on one. If you want off, send an email to listserv@listserv.uh.edu with:

unsubscribe coltrane-l

If listserv responds that you aren't subscribed, then your address has changed slightly since you first wrote to me and I have to unsubscribe you manually. Email me at jgreshes@netaxs.com if you have this problem.

If, instead, you want to stay on the list but would like to receive the list as a digest, mail listserv@listserv.uh.edu with:

set coltrane-l digest

The addresses to remember are:

listserv@listserv.uh.edu for adminstrative messages

coltrane-l@listserv.uh.edu is the list address and the address to write to when you want to post a message.
